In 1869, my grandfather, Constantine Vlahos, a Greek immigrant, arrived in New Orleans amidst the post Civil War turmoil. Times were difficult and work was hard to find. To provide for his family, Grandfather went to work in a French Quarter bawdy house. While there, he noticed the clientele was not only interested in the femme fatales, but also the Quarter's finest foods - particularly the sweets and pastries. To earn extra money, he began making pralines and other candies. After refining the recipe to be more appealing to the rich appetites of New Orleans society, his "sweets" became known throughout the Quarter, and demand was so great he had to quit his job and make candy full time.

My father followed in grandfather's footsteps and in 1940 started the Mary Ball Candy Company.  His candy soon became a symbol of quality and was being shipped all over the world.

Leon's candies began winning acclaim at the close of the last century in old New Orleans when visitors from all over the world stopped at the corner of St. Charles and Common to buy the famous candies, now called Pralines and Candies by Leon.  From those modest beginnings until the present day, the secret of Leon's candies is the fact that they are made from the world's finest ingredients - quality chocolates, choice sugars, select pecans, pure fresh cream and creamery butter.

Long known as the south's finest, Leon's candies are now sent daily to all parts of the globe.  Whenever you want a gift of distinction, make it a tin of Leon's candies.  There is no finer candy in all the world!
